Realist painter and illustrator born in Boston in 1836, Winslow Homer had little formal artistic training but was an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly magazine for 24 years and their primary illustrator of the American Civil War. In 1863 he began submitting oil paintings to the National Academy of Design. He spent a number of years in Europe after the war, including 10 months in France in 1866 during which time he was influenced by the impressionists and plein-aire painting. In 1873 while visiting Massachusetts, he began painting in watercolor and continued to use it almost exclusively until he died in 1910. He spent 1881 and most of 1882 in England where some believe he was greatly influenced by Turner and Constable. Homer is perhaps best known for his marine genre paintings. In 1998, Bill Gates bought Homer's “Lost on the Grand Banks, 1885" for a record US$30 million.
