 Jan van Eyck (1390-1441) was a Dutch "Northern Renasiance" portrait painter who originated the painting style characterized by photo-realistic depictions of natural lighting and surface effects which he achieved by perfecting the use of oil paints, particularly translucent glazes. In addtion to van Eyck, the greatest proponents of the Northern Renaissance were Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden.
