Rene Magritte is currently the most popular artist in the world.
He was born in the industrial city of Charleroi, Belgium in 1898
and died in Brussels in 1967.
Much
of his surrealistic art is erotic, such as Philosophy in the
Bedroom, or shocking, such as Pleasure. Perhaps this
can be partially explained by the fact that he was born under the
sun sign of Scorpio and his early life was hard. Perhaps it was
the great amount of time he spent as a child playing with a little
girl in the underground vaults of an abandoned cemetery which
enabled him to see the world in a different way.
However, one must also wonder how much his mother's suicide
affected him when he was 14 years old followed by a year of intensively
|
reading the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
Magritte didn't start painting until he
was 20. He married at 24 and began work as a textile pattern
designer.
But in 1926 he began working at a furious
pace, averaging a new painting every six days and had a one-man
exhibition the following year.
Magritte was always a leftist and three times joined the Communist
party but he couldn't stand the thought of his art being forced to
follow ideological party lines. All the posters he did for the
Communist party were rejected by its leadership. |

Magritte's most popular painting is
reported to be Dominion of Light aka Empire of Light
aka L'Empire des lumieres, 1954, 57.5 x 44.9 in. / 146 x
114 cm. However, the important role played by Son of Man aka
Le Fils de I'homme, 1964, 45.7 x 35 in. / 116 x 89 cm, in
the popular movie The Thomas Crown Affair makes
that painting a strong contender for #1.
