Marc Chagall, born under the sun sign Cancer, is often compared with Paul Klee
since both are classified as “painter-poets” who
believed color and design were the same concept. Rather than
considering this a positive characteristic, some so-called experts
cite it as a shortcoming in his art work while also accusing him
of being neither “modern” nor “contemporary”
and infatuated with religious, symbolic, literary, and
folkloristic ideas. Chagall disregarded criticism and was an
individualist who always went his own way.
Chagall frequently did repetitions,
replicas and reconstructions of his earlier paintings. He loved to
do French landscapes as well as still-life paintings of flowers
but his talent
|
was
broad and varied. Although considered an expressionist painter, he
did ceramic murals such as the baptistery of the Church of Notre
Dame on the Plateau d'Assy but he also did mosaics, bronze ware
and marble sculptures, illustrated books, stained glass, and
created tapestries for the Parliament of Israel.
