The full original size of "Sandvika", painted in 1895, was 28.9 x 36.4 in. / 73.4 x 92.5 cm. Like The Magpie, it is one of Monet's few attempts to capture bitter cold outdoor landscapes and winter sunlight on canvas.
Claude Monet, Sandvika, Norway, 1895, oil canvas, 28.9 x 36.4 in. / 73.4 x 92.5 cm, US$275
Monet spent from January to April of 1895 in the village of Sandvika, Norway visiting his step-son Jacques Hoschede. The village is not far from Oslo on the slopes of Mount Kolsaas.
It was after this chilling experience that he returned to Giverny in the Spring and built the Japanese-style bridge in his garden which he painted it for the first time. Five years later he began his famous series of paintings of this Japanese bridge which he dedicated himself to for the remainder of his life.
During the Franco-Prussian War, Monet fled to London for two years to avoid conscription into the military. While in London he spent a lot of time with Pissarro which affected his painting style, changing his choice of colors and continually decreasing the size of his brushstrokes.

Monet believed nature was a sanctuary from the sadder side of life — particularly commercial development — and he made sure every home he had after the war had a luxurious garden — or he made one. Above is a photo of Claude Monet in 1923-24 on the Rose Path leading to the house in his garden at Giverny.
