Diego Rivera painted Nude with Calla Liliesin 1944 and it's one of the few works he did that year. Also known as Desnudo con alcatraces, it lacks the searing social and political commentary so frequently found in Rivera paintings.
Although originally done in oil on hardboard at 61.8 x 48.8 in / 157 x 124 cm, we have reproduced this stunning painting of two of God's greatest creations in oil on canvas and reduced it to
32 x 25.3 in / 81.3 x 64.3 cm -- a size we consider more likely to be appropriate for most homes and offices.

Nude with Calla Lilieswas painted the same year as Day of the Dead. It was done just after his two great murals for the National Institute of

Cardiology and before the enormous mural Great City of Tenochtitlan.
Not only was Rivera a master artist, he was also an eccentric and political militant who played a pivotal role in Mexican history during the Revolution's struggle for
democracy. Rivera wore many hats: architect, sculptor, painter, graphic artist, draughtsman, costume designer,  illustrator, stage designer and twice the husband of Frida Kahlo and the first to recognize her great talent.
He liked to present himself as exotic born, precocious, visionary, rebellious, and pre-destined although he is reported to have had a “colossal imagination” and difficulty separating reality and fiction when it came to himself. Regardless, he was no casual observer of life and actively shaped the events of his time, not merely content to paint them.
Born in Guanajuanto, Mexico in 1886, he traveled the globe and studied in Europe. When he died of cancer in Mexico City on 24 November 1957, he

requested that his ashes be mingled with those of Kahlo ( who had died in July 1954) at her “Blue House” in Coyaoacan. His wishes were not respected by his wife at that time, Emma Hurtado.
