Many art critics consider Edward Hopper, 1882-1967, to be the first significant American painter in twentieth century art. His New Realism is considered the polar opposite of Jackson Pollock's Abstract Expressionism. Hopper's ambiguity made him the forerunner of American Pop Art.
However, Early Sunday Morning uses a two-fold aesthetic system: representational as well as semi-abstracted. It depicts the small businesses and shops of Seventh Avenue in New York City. Although the time of day is clearly early morning, someone other than Hopper added the word “Sunday" to the title.

Edward Hopper, Early Sunday Morning, 1930, oil on canvas, 35 x 60 in. / 88.9 x 152.4 cm, US$550

Hopper originally painted a person looking out one of the second floor windows but he later painted it out. This created quite a buzz among art critics and the other painters in 1930. Some critics argue that Hopper probably felt that the architecture alone conveyed the feeling of the work.
Early Sunday Morning is an enormous painting at 60 inches long! Since only a few homes would have an area to appropriately display such a huge painting we offer it at 60% of the original size which is still a BIG painting!
Now on display in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, it is well worth the time to visit the museum for a view of the original work. It was purchased with funds from Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.
After spending a year in Paris at a young age, Hopper returned to the United States and soon developed his unique style. He never changed it the rest of his life.
Hopper's subject was everyday America. He captured

in old houses, movie theaters, bars, and rural landscapes scenes that conceal memory, hope, adventure, poetry, and the intangible American spirit.
Hopper's life was quiet, disciplined and orderly, much like his paintings. For more than 50 years he painted in his New York studio on the top floor of 3 Washington Square North and he never let fame and celebrity go to his head.
